Welcome to my Website! Why are Copyediting and Proofreading Important?Have you ever received a letter or other document, read a magazine article or book, and thought to yourself that something was in error? Those documents are reflections of the writer, editor, or publisher. If there are errors, those reflections aren't very good. All the documents you submit to school or work are indicative of your intelligence, your ability to understand, interpret and convey. Editing the material for errors such as spelling, grammar, structural problems, and a myriad of inconsistencies, will enable you to produce a document that will be correct, easily read, and will indicate to the recipient that you have taken care to produce the best document you can. This is especially important if your document is to be published in print or on the web where a large audience will see (and notice!) the quality of your work, or if your document is a resume or curriculum vitae that is being submitted to prospective employers. My Freelance Copyeditor Services:I take your writing and do the final read-through, editing, and spelling and grammar check. When I edit material, I usually go through a page three times, basically a word at a time. I sometimes read out loud if the material is especially difficult to understand. I also check subject/verb consistency, punctuation, sentence structure, and overall consistency and form. All website names are checked as are quotation referrals. Basic mathematics and tables are checked as well.I will not change content, but may recommend changes to words, sentences, or paragraphs in order to improve flow or readability. If I have a problem with a section, I will put a comment or question in brackets. I usually use Microsoft Word Track Changes which enables me to alter the document and you to see what I have done or recommended and accept or reject the change. If English isn't your first language and you need help to make it sound natural and professional, you've come to the right place! I'd be happy to help you with your dissertation, thesis, report or essay, and I offer a discounted rate for students. Of course, documents for professional publication are more than welcome as well. Proofreading and copy editing are not really interchangeable. Copy editing involves a detailed spelling, punctuation and grammar check, essentially checking and correcting the entire document. Proofreading, in its traditional sense, involves getting the material ready for publishing by checking the proof copy and marking it for the typesetter to correct. Nowadays proofreading may involve some copy editing as well.Copy editors take the material the writer has presented and go through it one word, one comma, at a time. The document is checked for consistency of form and structure in addition to all the other possible and potential areas for errors. If you mention a formula on page 7 and refer to it again on page 27, the copy editor will check both to ensure they say the same thing. A table which contains a list of numbers will also be checked for simple addition. A good copy editor will look at all the material presented, check and re-check facts and make corrections and recommendations. Incidentally, the term copy editing is also commonly and acceptably spelled as one word (copyediting) as well as hyphenated (copy-editing). Similarly, proofreading can also be hyphenated (proof-reading).
